2017 FeatherFest a huge success
GINTC’s signature project is the Island’s annual birding and nature photography festival held in April during spring migration. Galveston is one of the top locations in the country for birding because it hosts a wide variety of habitats in a small geographical area where some 300 species make their permanent or temporary home throughout the year.
This year over 600 registrants from 22 states, Australia, and Canada identified 224 species of birds during FeatherFest field trips!
Mark your calendar now to attend the largest birding festival on the Upper Texas Coast, and the only one with a dedicated nature photography track. FeatherFest 2018 is April 19 – 22!
Galveston Island is one of the top locations in the country for birding. The island has a rich variety of natural habitats within its 32 miles. The beaches, wetlands, grasslands, woods, ponds, and bays are home to many common year-round bird species, as well as numerous others that visit briefly or for part of the year. The area is truly one of the best places in the country to bird because the Texas coast is on the Central Flyway, a broad, hourglass-shaped migratory flight path that extends from Alaska to South America. More than three hundred species of birds stop here on their way south or north, and the best months to see them are March and April.
FeatherFest is a project of the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council which supports nature tourism and education, and promotes the value of area natural habitats.
